Sweat baby sweat
Jan Martens brings an ode to love, a hymn to one of the most heart-warming genres in art: the love duet. The first part, a small guide on how to treat your lifetime companion, gives a tender insight into an intimate relationship. A man and a woman dance together, literally skin to skin. In the second part, sweat baby sweat, dance, music, song fragments and video material tell the story of a lifelong romantic relationship shaped by the rhythm of letting go and grabbing hold again.
Jan Martens (BE, 1984) reveals the beauty and ugliness of ordinary people in his work. His symbiosis of narrative theatre and abstract dance with the use of music and dance elements from popular culture make his work extremely accessible. Jan Martens will be Artist in Residence at ICK Amsterdam by Emio Greco PC from 2013.

The press:
‘A small guide… is a successful experiment in dance drenched in life experience and sensitive storytelling.
Even the surprised newcomer to dance is forced to admit: this production has got you by the short and curlies before you know it. – De Morgen
‘Martens’ style of movement breathes traces of the painstaking idiom of choreographer Ann van Den Broek, with a hint of Abramovic’s strength of performance, but thanks to the pared-down presentation, also has a character of its own. – de Volkskrant
‘This dance for a couple really keeps the outside world outside, with the exception of a mobile phone ringing. The pair Martens and Zijlstra really become one. – KNACK
